Handicapped Accessible Playground

Swing sets...sliding boards...sand boxes – these playground activities create endless hours of joy and exercise for most children. But disabled children cannot readily enjoy these simple pleasures. That’s why the Pasco Pediatric Foundation was pleased to donate $20,000 toward the construction of a handicapped-accessible playground at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. Dedicated in October 2000, the playground contains about 2,700 square-feet of specially designed equipment for children with special needs.

This playground is the first of its kind in the Tampa Bay area and serves nearly 300 children in the community. Constructed by the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department, the playground is wheelchair accessible and provides hours of fun with slides, ramps and tunnels for children with limited mobility, range of motion and eyesight.

The Pasco Pediatric Foundation dedicated a new shelter at the J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey, Florida in March 2008. It is located adjacent to the playground for the children and families of Pasco County. Over $25,000 was spent to construct this shelter along with new concrete sidewalks. Many thanks to our community partners, in-kind sponsors and to the Pasco Parks and Recreation Department.
